Almost as soon as the American Eskimo dog had been developed as a pure breed, early in the 20th century, the process of miniaturization began. Before long there was a distinct, smaller version that soon because separately recognized as the Miniature American Eskimo.
The Standard American Eskimo is 15-19 in (38-48 cm) in height whereas the Miniature is only 12-15 in (31-38 cm). The Standard weighs 20-35 lb (9-16 kg), while the Miniature tips the scales at only 11-20 lb (5-9 kg). Apart from this size difference, the two breeds are virtually identical.
