In the north-east of the Sudan, towards the Red Sea coast, the nomadic, pastoral Bisharin people have a strange type of greyhound with prick ears and a curly tail. It has been claimed that this breed is a direct descendant of the ancient Egyptian Tesem, but that is unlikely.
This tribe tends to feed its dogs largely on milk, with very little solid food, which is poor preparation for a strenuous chase in pursuit of fast-running game. As a result, the dogs are not strong enough to hunt singly and it usually takes a group of them to succeed in catching a hare.
