Also known as the Canary Islands Hound, the Canarian Warren Hound, the Chien de Garenne des Canaries, and locally as the Podenco Canario, this ancient breed has been employed for centuries in the pursuit of small game, especially rabbits.
This is one of a number of greyhound- like sighthounds which are direct descendants of the early Egyptian dogs that were distributed across the Mediterranean and beyond by the ubiquitous Phoenician traders in the first millennium BC. In appearance it closely resembles the Ibizan Hound and the Pharaoh Hound, with its slender, athletic build, long face, tall, pricked ears and short, flat coat. It is a vigorous hunter, well adapted to working in the volcanic regions of the Canary Islands. In personality, it has been described as intelligent, stubborn and sometimes nervous.
