Also known as the Magyar Agar, the Magyarorszag or the Magyar Greyhound, this breed was originally developed to course bare andfix. In France it is the Lévrier Hongrois, in Germany the Ungariscber Windhund, in Spain the Lebrel Hungaro.
The Hungarian or Magyar Greyhound is a smaller-than-average greyhound that was brought to its present homeland from the east, arriving with the Magyar people in the ninth century AD. Its first specific mention occurs between AD 895 and 907, in the writings of Count Arpad.
During the 19th century there was a great deal of interbreeding between this dog and the typical European greyhounds. The result is that today the Hungarian Greyhound looks much like the English version. The main difference is in the slightly shorter muzzle of the Hungarian breed. In Greece this animal has, like its English counterpart elsewhere, been co-opted for use on the racetrack. This is a dog with an intelligence that is as fast as its feet.
