A second major category of dogs comprises those breeds that are concerned with the protection or control of domestic livestock. Sporting dogs are all involved in helping with attacks on other animals — either by hunting for prey or by fighting rival dogs — but livestock dogs, in complete contrast, are dedicated to the welfare of their animal companions. They must aid their human owners by defending farm animals from thieves or predators, or by influencing the movements of groups of domestic stock. These are the fearless guardians and the nimble herders.
