Medium Poodle

This is a recently designated breed, based on a subtle size distinction.

The Kennel Club in London, like many other canine organizations, recognizes only three sizes of Poodle: Standard, Miniature and Toy. In recent times, however, a fourth size has been accepted as a separate breed by some authorities, although many Poodle experts view this as a case of unwarranted hair-splitting. This fourth breed is called the Medium Poodle and is intermediate in size between the Standard and the Miniature. The FCI lists the four breed sizes as follows:

BREEDSIZE
Large (Standard)45 cm up to 60 cm
MediumMore than 35 cm up to 45 cm
MiniatureMore than 28 cm up to 35 cm
ToyBelow 28 cm

Other organizations, adhering to the three-size system, see Miniatures measuring up to IS in (38 cm) in height and Standards measuring from IS in (38 cm) upwards. In order to wedge the new Medium breed in between these two, it has been necessary to decrease the maximum size of the Miniature and increase the minimum size of the Standard. Since some countries follow the new four-tier system and others keep the old three-tier one, confusion will no doubt occur at an international level.

If the Medium Poodle differed in some way other than mere size, it would be easier to accept the breed, but since this does not yet appear to be the case, its status must remain doubtful. In its defence, it can be said that its justification lies in the need to reduce the overcrowded Poodle classes at many major shows.

It should be noted that the Miniature Poodle is unfortunately also known as the Caniche Moyen, or Medium Poodle, in some countries, adding further confusion.
