Prazsky Krysavik

This is the most recent of all European companion dogs. Its name translates as ‘Prague Beauty’, and it has been bred exclusively as a pet dog for urban living.

This tiny, short-coated, black-and-tan dog, with bat-like ears, a pointed muzzle and spindly legs, was created in the 1980s in Prague. By the end of the 20th century there were approximately 600 of them in existence, nearly all to be found in Prague itself. Although it is such a new dog, it is already breeding pure and has been included in some European dog shows. It was developed by local canine enthusiasts who wanted to own a tiny lapdog that was unique to their country.

In height it is only 7-8 in (18-20 cm) and it weighs only 2-6 lb (I-3 kg), making it smaller than a Yorkshire Terrier and roughly the same size as the Chihuahua.
