Sporting dogs and livestock dogs are all concerned with duties involving other animals — hunting them, fighting them, guarding them or herding them. But there is another major canine category comprising breeds that aid their human owners without interacting with other animals. These are the service dogs, breeds which carry out a wide variety of canine duties, from offering companionship, carrying out work in the house, providing their own meat as food, providing their own hair for clothing, guarding human property, rescuing human victims, assisting in transportation or searching for truffles.
