This small breed is also referred to as the American Toy Terrier, the Amertoy or simply the TFT. It was developed from larger working terriers primarily for use as a companion dog, although it is still capable of ridding a house of rodent pests.
This breed is a min. iature version of the Smooth Fox Terrier, created largely by breeding from successive generations of litter runts, until dogs weighing less than 7 lb (3 kg) started to arrive and eventually began to breed true. They are small enough to be carried in one hand. It has been suggested that both Chihuahua and Toy Manchester Terrier may have been introduced during breeding programmes to assist in size reduction.
The TFT was first registered as a separate breed with the United Kennel Club in America in 1936. In 1949 the National Toy Fox Terrier Association was formed in Ohio.
In character, the breed has been described as self-possessed, energetic, spirited and determined. In other words, despite its small size it retains a true terrier personality. Although all dogs prefer a rural setting, with plenty of opportunity for exercise, this tiny breed can adapt more easily than most to the restrictions of urban living. Its height is only 10 in (25 cm), its weight 4-7 lb (2-3 kg).
